Aceh stopped its heartbeat after the tsunami disaster stroke down on December 26th 2004, the most devastating natural disaster in human history killing almost 200.000 in Aceh alone. Nowadays, as the people and economy slowly have restored, Aceh wakes up offering you several tourism spots to visit.

The Aceh Darussalam Sultanate was born in the 14th century when Samudera Pasai Kingdom was on the verge of collapsing. The capital of the kingdom was in Kutaraja which is the forebear of Banda Aceh City.

Things to see

Masjid Raya Baiturrahman is the icon of Aceh. This magnificent mosque with 5 domes is located at the centre of Banda Aceh. Other things to see are the tsunami remnants: a PLTD ship and a ship on top of a house (at Lampulo). These ships pushed far inland by the tsunami became a symbol of the tsunami and have a monumental status now.

Because of its location at the top of the island Sumatrao and surrounded by water, Aceh is dominated by water tourism. The most famous of them is Pulau Weh (Weh Island) which is located 32 km north from Banda Aceh. This island is a tourists favorite for its unspoiled beautiful nature. In Weh Island we can both go diving and fishing.

For you who don’t really like the water, there’s a mall in Aceh named Hermes Palace Mall to satisfy your shopping desires. You can also try some rides at the theme park here, here such as 4D Max Rider, 1000 bola (thousand balls) and many others included in Hermes Happy Land.

Banda Aceh offers various culinary delights like ayam tangkap, alse known as ayam tsunami, made of fried chicken along with various spices and served with spices’ leaves. For those who look for really spicy food, you can try gulai kambing and kari (curry), or nasi gurih.

Banda Aceh is served by the Sultan Iskandarmuda Airport.

Sultan Iskandarmuda Airport in Banda Aceh is named after the twelfth sultan of Aceh, Iskandar Muda. It serves mostly domestic destinations but also a few international ones.

Entering the city from the airport

Airport taxis charge a set rate of Rp 80,000 for the 16km ride to Banda Aceh. A taxi from the airport to Uleh-leh port for a boat to the nearby islands will cost Rp 130,000. Labi-labi are the main form of transport around town and cost Rp 1500.
