Pangkalan Bun is the capital of Kotawaringin Barat district, Kalimantan Tengah Province. This city is known as its motto, kota Manis, which is the abbreviation of Minat, Aman, Nikmat, Indah and Segar (Interest, Safe, Joyful, Beautiful and Fresh). There are many plantation and silvikultur company settled in this city. Meanwhile, the most famous thing of Pangkalan Bun is the Kecubung Stone usually brought by tourists back home as gifts or souvenirs.

Pangkalan Bun History

The history of Pangkalan Bun is related to the history of Kotawaringin Barat for Pangkalan Bun is the capital of Kotawaringin Barat district. Kotawaringin Barat has been dwelled since 2500 BC until now. Pangkalan Bun was called as Pangkalan Buun. Pangkalan means port, and Buun is the name of a river. This city was called so for it was a port on the edge of Buun River. In 1841, the palace in Kotawaringin Lama was abandoned then the king’s place was moved to Pangkalan Bun. This king’s place is the Kuning Palace.

There’s a nature conservation you can see in Pangkalan Bun, the name is Istana Kuning inheritted by Kotawaringin Kingdom. You can also see the majesty and interior of the palace and inheritances kept inside in Istana Kuning (Kuning Palace). You can go to Patih Mambang Waterfall and Tanjung Penghujan beach to enjoy both sunset and sunrise at those places. You can also have an extraordinary experience while visiting Tanjung Puting National Park for you can see directly the habitat of orang utan and other animals.

For you who love to do water sport, you can come to Gosong Senggora which is the cluster of small islands. The wave at Gosong Senggora is suitable for surfing. The underwater scenery is so beautiful, you can see it while diving.

Typical food of Pangkalan Bun is like no other, for example is coto manggala. It tastes like common soto (clear soup), the special of this coto is the manggala (cassava) dominating this food. Typical snack you can find in Pangkalan Bun is kemplang or fish chips.

Airport at Pangkalan Bun

Pangkalan Bun is served by the Iskandar Airport.

The Iskandar Airport is a Class II domestic airport with basic facilities located on the Iskandar Pangkalan Bun street, about ten kilometers from the city center. From here you can fly to several cities on Borneo and Java.

Entering the city from the airport

Busses are not available, but taxis are cheap for around Rp. 60.000 for the trip to the city centre.
